Use Brushstroke Paper from Stampin Up for Flowers

Simply Said With Karen Posted on July 7, 2022 by Karen GilbertJuly 21, 2022

Use brushstroke paper from Stampin! Up! for flowers on a Thinking of you card.

This paper is new and appears in the new 2022/23 Annual Catalogue. It is very thin with a subtle pattern imprinted on the paper which makes it ideal for making flowers. The papers come in 3 colours: Blushing Bride, Night of Navy and Soft Succulent. Flowers are punched several times, layered together to add dimension and then curled up with a Bone Folder.

Mother’s Day Celebration with the Bottle of Happiness

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 9, 2022 by Karen GilbertMay 21, 2022

Mother’s Day celebration with the Bottle of Happiness stamp set helped to celebrate the day. This stamp set is so much fun to use, once you get the placement of one stamp on top of another.  You have to really study the stamp so that the image looks like only one image was used.

As Mother passed away 2 years ago, I made these cards for my Daughter and my DNL and her partner. We celebrated by going for supper and we had a great time.  As my grandchildren are now teenagers, I don’t get to see them as often as I like.  PS I am not complaining. I understand they have lives too.

Bottle of Happiness Card Recipe

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 4, 2022 by Karen GilbertMay 4, 2022

Ocean waves may inspire and/or bring you calmness. You can be on the ocean or on the seashore with  the sounds of the  crashing waves and embracing the wonders that lie below the surface..  However, the ocean also has a dangerous side and it’s important to remember that.

Create the Card

  • Before starting to create the card, cut a border from Basic White cardstock and the Basic Border Dies.  Lay the cut out from the Basic Border dies with the curves up on the Basic White cardstock panel. Ink the Blending Brush with Pool Party ink.  Use the die cut as a  stencil and swirl the brush on the Basic White cardstock.  Move the stencil around to create different patterns for the clouds.
  • Ink the Wave stamp with VersaMark, then ink with Pool Party ink. Add the Coastal Cabana ink to the stamp in various places with a Sponge Dauber.  Now, stamp on the Basic White cardstock. Heat emboss with white embossing powder and heat gun..
  • Ink the rocks from the Ocean Front with Soft Suede ink.  Cut out with the Paper Snips.
  • Stamp the pelican and the logs with Tuxedo Black Memento ink. Stamp the Pelican head & body a second time.  Use the Bronze Stampin’ Blend, to color the logs the strings with the Smoky Slate Blend.  Color the Pelican’s beak with the Pumpkin Pie Blend,, the head with  Smoky Slate Blend and the body with the light Black Blend. Color the 2nd Pelican’s head and body the same way. Die cut with the pelican and logs dies.
  • Attach the pelican and logs on the right hand side of the waves.  Adhere the 2nd pelican with Mini Dimensionals to the 1st pelican.
  • Stamp the birds on the sky with the Basic Grey ink.

Sentiment

  • Lightly stamp the wave stamp on a scrap of Basic White cs. Ink the sentiment stamp with Night of Navy and stamp on the Basic White.  Die cut and attach to the card front with dimensionals. Adhere 2 Rhinestone Waves Basic Jewels to either end of the sentiment.  TIP: If you don’t have these gems, then color the Basic Rhinestone Jewels with a Stampin’ Blends

Happiness, What Does It Mean To You?

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 22, 2022 by Karen GilbertApril 22, 2022

Happiness, what does it mean to you?  Let’s first define happiness as it means different things to different people.  The Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as:

“a: state of well-being and contentment.

b: a pleasurable or satisfying experience wish you every happiness in life.”

Therefore, happiness is an emotional response to things happening to us or around us.

With all the unhappy events in the world today, we must dig deep to find joy.  However, we can  change our attitude towards the events.

Look at what you have or do that makes you have that feeling of delight and/or contentment.  Maybe you craft ( doesn’t matter what craft), or cook, or have grandchildren and children in your life. Grab onto those feelings when you are feeling down or overwhelmed by the what’s going on around you.

For me, it’s paper crafting and running my business that gives me enjoyment.  I can disappear to my studio and spend hours and then feel satisfied when I am done.  What really me satisfies is when I my studio is clean.

Here is what happened in the studio yesterday. A “Hues of Happiness” card. This is a sneak peak and the suite is available on May 3rd in the new Annual Catalogue.

Tulips Poke their Heads Through the Earth – It’s a sure sign of Spring

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 8, 2022 by Karen GilbertApril 18, 2022

Tulips poke their heads through the dirt to welcome Spring. It’s a sure sign that more flowers will be coming.  Spring is a period of renewal and we all look forward to the time when the snow disappears, the air warms up and the smell of freshly cut grass.

Now we can create cards and other projects with the Flowering Fields Suite. The Suite consists of Flowering Tulips Bundle, Tulips Fields Bundle., Flowering Fields Designer Series Paper, Evening Evergreen Window Paned Check Ribbon, and Brush Brass Butterflies.

This is a pretty impressive bundle.

Tulips poke their heads

Tulip Spring Card Recipe

Stamp Set: Tulip Fields

Ink: Calypso Coral, Tuxedo Black Memento, Evening Evergreen, Pear Pizzazz.

Paper: Basic White, Calypso Coral, Flowering Fields Designer Series Paper.

Accessories: Stampin’ Cur & Emboss Machine, Tulip Dies, Evening  Evergreen 3/8″ Open Weave Ribbon, Brushed Enamel Shapes.

Measurements

Basic White :5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″  Score at 4-1/4″ and burnish with the Bone Folder, 3-1/4″ x 4-1/2″.

Calypso Coral: 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.

Flowering Fields Designer Series Paper:  4″ x 5-1/4″

Ribbon: 5″

The stamp set is a 2-step stamp, which means that you can stamp 2 different stamp over each other and get depth in your colors.  Sometimes you can use 2 different colored inks, a light color and a dark color, or the same color, one stamp at full ink strength and the other stamp, inked and stamped off.  General you stamp the lighter color on the stamp with less details and the darker color on the stamp with more detail. Clear as mud, right?  Now if the stamps are photopolymer, then it is easy to line up the 2 stamps, if the stamps are cling, then I recommend using the Stamparatus to align the stamps.

Create the Card

  • Stamping the open tulip and the closed tulip:
    • Stamp the more detailed tulip stamp with Calypso Coral ink on the smaller Basic White Panel.  Ink up the less detailed stamp with Calypso Coral and stamp off on scrap paper, to remove some ink from the stamp.  Now, without reinking, line up the stamp over the previous image and stamp. (see placement on photo above)
  • Ink the stem in Pear Pizzazz and stamp at the bottom of the open tulip. Stamp the bit of grass at the bottom of the stem with Pear Pizzazz. Clean stamp and then ink with Evening Evergreen and angle the stamp and stamp at the bottom of the closed tulip. Again clean the grass stamp and stamp with Evening Evergreen ink at bottom of the evergreen stem.
  • Finally, stamp 2 small leaves, one in Pear Pizzazz and 1 large leaf in Evening Evergreen ink.
  • Stamp a sentiment with Calypso Coral ink on the bottom right Basic White panel.
  • Attach the DSP to the Calypso Coral card base and then Adhere your focal image on an angle to the DSP.
  • Tie a knot in the ribbon and trim ends.  Adhere to stem bottoms with Glue Dots.
  • Adhere 2 larger butterflies and 1 smaller butterflies to image panel.

Finish Up and Decorate Your Envelope

Decorate the inside of your card. Use a strip of DSP and/or stamp an image.  Perhaps you can also stamp that image on your envelope.

If you would like to create this card, you can still order the stamp and dies as a bundle.  Once the 2022 Jan- June Mini catalogue expires at the end of June,  you will need to purchase separately.

Why is the crane good luck

Let’s go back and look at the symbolism of the crane.

Crane Symbolism

The crane symbolises beauty, grace and harmony.  It represents positive change, balance and living in harmony with others.  These are a few things that we could use in the world right now.

Many have seen or made an origami crane, known as the peace crane.  I have seen one but have never created one.  Maybe I need to do that.

Why is the Crane Good Luck

I hope you have enjoyed this post on the the crane and it’s symbolism.  Leave me a comment and tell me if you agree with the question “why is the crane good luck?”

Tulip Fields and Windmills Can be Seen in the Netherlands

Simply Said With Karen Posted on March 6, 2022 by Karen GilbertMarch 8, 2022

Tulip fields and windmills are associated with the Netherlands.  I can only image what spring looks like when the blossoms are in full bloom.  The colors are so vibrant and you usually see them in any flower colour.   Windmills are another icon of Holland.  They are seen throughout Holland, many standing over the tulip fields.

The Holland people built them to preserve their land.  Because Holland was below sea level, the windmills constantly pumped the water out of the fields.  A dike was built to protect the country from flooding.  I am sure that many of you have heard the story about the little Dutch boy who saved Holland by putting his finger in the dike.

For this card, I chose to use the Jan-Jun Mini Catalogue (page 14) as my inspiration.

Symbols of Fortune – What are the Different Types of Fortune Symbols.

Simply Said With Karen Posted on February 7, 2022 by Karen GilbertFebruary 19, 2022

Symbols of Fortune appears in many countries and cultures around the world.  One that many of us are familiar with is the 4-leaf clover.  This particular foliage is popular in Ireland and stands for love, hope, faith and luck. The one we are most familiar with is the lucky 4-leaf clover.

In the Jan-Jul 2022 Mini Catalogues, there is a suite called the “Symbols of Fortune” . In the stamp set, I see ginkgo leaves from the tree of the same name, which is original to China, the crane, dragonflies and the magnolia tree.  If I got any wrong, please forgive me.

The one, I chose to create a card around is the Magnolia flower which symbolizes purity and nobility in the Chinese culture.

Gold Flakes Water Resist Technique

  1. Gold Flakes Water Resist Technique: Use the single smaller Basic White panel and emboss with the Painted Texture 3-D Emboss Folder.  Take the VersaMark ink and lightly pull the pad over the embossed panel.  Sprinkle with Heat & Stick Powder and heat set with Heat Tool. Sprinkle with the Gold Glitter Flakes and rub off until you get the effect you want
  2. Put a drop of the reinker on a clear block.  Put water in the Water Painter brush.  Squeeze water onto the ink drop and drop onto the embossed panel.  Do not puddle the ink and make sure there is white showing.   If the cs is too wet, turn over on a paper towel and blot the excess water. Once dry attach to the DSP panel.

Create the Card

  1. Attach the DSP to the Smokey Slate card base.
  2. Stamp the flower with Calypso Coral ink on the smaller Basic White panel. Stamp another flower with Evening Evergreen ink on the second smaller Basic White panel. Die cut both flowers. Cut off the leaves from the Calypso Coral flower.  Attach the Calypso Coral flower to the Evening Evergreen flower.  The leaves look as though they are coming out from below the flower.
  3. Attach the flower to the embossed and painted panel with Stampin’ Dimensionals. Attach 2 strips of the ribbon to the panel below the flower.  Leave a space between the 2 strips.
  4. Cut the fan flowers from Basic White with the fan die. Attach on an angle to the right hand side of the large flower.
  5. Stamp the sentiment on a piece of Basic White using VersaMark.  Sprinkle with Gold Emboss powder and heat set with Heat Tool.  Adhere the sentiment below the ribbon with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
