Stay Calm and Craft – Anxiety? Do What Makes You Happy!

Simply Said With Karen Posted on March 17, 2020 by Karen GilbertMarch 17, 2020

Stay calm, is probably a phrase that you will hear plenty of times in the near future.  With the COVID-19 virus, hitting the globe, we must care for ourselves and our families.  We take so many things for granted and now its about our movements restricted, business slowing down, events and activities being cancelled, etc, etc.  It’s a lot to take in at this time.

So, what to do for ourselves and family? If you live in North America, our spring is right around the corner and with extra daylight, we can get outside. We don’t have to be housebound.  As long as you take precautions, like staying 2 meters away from others, and washing your hands with soap and water, you can enjoy the great outdoors.  Go for a hike, take the dog for a walk, just do some physical activity.  Doing things that you like will help the anxiety that you may be feeling.

For me, it’s paper crafting.  While I like creating greeting cards, I also like to make scrapbooks.  So, I can get caught up on crafting those scrap pages. What are some of things that you never seem to get to ? Now is the time to get going on them.

Right now, we are off to Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

Paper Crafting Tip To Make Up the 1 Hour Lost – Daylight Savings Time

Simply Said With Karen Posted on March 6, 2020 by Karen GilbertMarch 6, 2020

Here’s a paper crafting tip to help you make up the 1 hour you will loose this weekend.  In North America, we roll our clocks 1 hour ahead this weekend.  Implementation of the time change helps us gain extra daylight at the end of day rather than having it at the beginning of the day when most people are still asleep.

Paper Crafting Tip

In the Fall, we turn our clocks back so we don’t actually loose an our of sleep. There are a number of areas that are pushing for Daylight Saving Time to be a permanent change.

The British Columbian government did a survey last year to find how many people supported not changing the time twice a year. The majority of people want to get rid of this twice a year ritual.

Valid reasons to eliminate the time change:

  • It appears that car accidents, workplace injuries, suicide and miscarriages occur more frequently at the start of Daylight Savings Time (DST).
  • When DST ends, the early evening darkness is linked to depression.

Here is my Paper Crafting Tip

Paper Crafting tip

Do you ever create multiple cards using the same layout, same stamps and cardstock? You will save you time if you use the Stamparatus.

What can the Stamparatus do to save me time.

  • Align your stamp on your cardstock, press the clear plate on the stamp, ink the stamp and lower the place on your cardstock.  Now, you can stamp the same image multiple times by lining up your cardstock in the same place.
  • If you have more than one image that you want to use on the card, then place your stamp on the cardstock, use another plate and press the stamp onto this plate., Again, ink the stamp and press on your cardstock.  Now you have 2 images on the same piece of cardstock.  Now you can make multiple cards with ease.
  • You will stamp crisp and clean images and if you miss a spot, reink the stamp and stamp again.  You do not have to start again.
  • Save time and money because you will make fewer mistakes.
  • Make fewer mistakes, saving time and money
  • Use the reversible plate  to create 2-step, 3-step, and/or 4 step  images
  • The plates are adjustable, so you can create exciting new techniques.
  • Stamp with accuracy every time.

Use this paper crafting tip, to make up for the hour you loose this weekend.  You can purchase the Stamparatus on my ONLINE STORE

Mountain Rides with a Dirt Bike – A Great Masculine Card

Simply Said With Karen Posted on February 28, 2020 by Karen GilbertFebruary 28, 2020

What’s better than taking mountain rides on a dirt bike. If you have a sense of adventure, then it’s a way to get outside in the fresh air, the wind in your hair and grit in your teeth.  .

mountain rides
While a say this is a masculine card, you can also use this for a female who has an interest in these types of experiences. However, this card is for my grandson who turned 16 years old this week.  He likes speed and adventure.

I never rode a dirt bike, however, I did ride on the back of a motorcycle. You have different perspective compared to riding in a vehicle.  It’s all about the sights and the sounds.

Because the stamp is manufactured from a specialized photopolymer it is reversible.  You can use both sides of the stamp to create your images.

Mountain Rides Card Recipe

Stamp Sets: Mountain Air, Petal to the Metal.

Ink: Balmy Blue, Night of Navy, Tuxedo Black, Mossy Meadow, So Saffron, Daffodil Delight, Soft Suede, Early Espresso.

Paper: Early Espresso, Whisper White, Soft Suede, Old Olive.

Accessories:Die Cutting & Embossing Machine, Majestic Mountain Dies, Purple Posy Stampin’ Write Marker, Stampin’ Blends: Balmy Blue Duo, Basic Black Light, Smoky Slate Duo, Paper Snips, Stamping Sponges Aqua Painter Brush.

Cutting Measurements

Early Espresso card base – 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/2″

Soft Suede panel – 5-1/4″ x 4″.

Whisper White – 5″ x 3-3/4″ (stamp the scenery background), scraps for mountain ridge.

Old Olive – scraps for forest and grasses.

Soft Suede – scraps for ridge at the bottom of grass and the road.

Mountain Ride

Instructions

  • Ink the mountain stamp on the non-etched side with Purple Posy marker and stamp off on scratch paper.  Stamp the mountain about a 1/3 of the way down the Whisper White cs. Clean the stamp and ink with Night of Navy, stamp off once and stamp on previous mountains leaving a narrow border of the other mountains.
  • Ink the etched side of the stamp with Night of Navy.  Stamp on a piece of scrap Whisper White. Use your Aqua Painter Brush to pull the ink into the white space on the mountains.  Die cut with matching die, Adhere to the previous stamped mountain, leaving a border of the light blue mountains.
  • Stamp the trees and grass on Old Olive with Mossy Meadow ink.  Attach to the mountains.
  • Tear a strip of Soft Suede cs and sponge the top and bottom with Early Espresso ink.  Stamp the tire tracks from the Petal to the Metal stamp set with Early Espresso ink.  Attach to area below the grass.
  • Tear another piece of Soft Suede on the top and sponge along the tear with Early Espresso ink.  Also, sponge the some of the cardstock.  Attach below the piece with the tire tracks.
  • Sponge the top of the Whisper White with Balmy Blue ink. Stamp the sun using the smooth side of stamp with So Saffron ink.  Turn the stamp over and ink with Crushed Curry.
  • Stamp the dirt bike, or one of the all terrain vehicles on Whisper White cs with Tuxedo Black ink.  Color with a variety of Stampin’ Blends.  Fussy cut with Paper Snips and attach to the left side of card so that the bike appears to on the road.
  • Stamp a sentiment on the right hand side with Early Espresso ink.
  • If you wish, you can stamp a sentiment on a Whisper White panel and attach to the inside of the card.

So, if you know someone who likes to go on mountain rides, and/or like to ride dirt bikes, then this card is for them.

Flower Vases, Umbrellas, Boots. What They Have In Common

Simply Said With Karen Posted on February 24, 2020 by Karen GilbertFebruary 23, 2020

What do flower vases, umbrellas and boots have in common?  The answer must be water or rain.

Do you remember the song, “Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another Day!” If you lived or have lived in a wet climate, then you may have learned this song when you were young. I lived in Prince Rupert until I was 15.  Prince Rupert which is located on the central coast of British Columbia, is known for rain, storms and wind. And yes, there were many summers when it rained continuously.

We moved to a dryer climate and enjoyed the warmth and little rain.  If you have ever been to Reno Nevada, our topography and climate is nearly identical.

So, when I saw the Under My Umbrella stamp set in the 2020 Mini Catalogue, I knew that it would be great for cards. What better flower vase than an upside down umbrella.

Practice Positive Thoughts and Affirmations They Lift Your Spirits

Simply Said With Karen Posted on February 18, 2020 by Karen GilbertFebruary 18, 2020

Do you practice positive thoughts and affirmations?  Our well being is so important these days.  I know I find a great deal of negativity  in the world today.  I have a nickname for them…Debbie Downers.

It seems as though there are people who go through life miserable and tend to make others feel miserable. We need to start with ourselves.  We must fix the unhappiness within, if we hope to encourage others to fix their unhappy feelings and they way they conduct themselves.

Positive Thoughts and AffirmationsThere are many ways to achieve positivity.  One way to start is to repeat affirmations out loud and in front of a mirror.. You eyes will see you speaking and your ears will hear you repeating these thoughts.

Here are some that you can start with:

  • I learn from my mistakes….mistakes are a source of opportunity.
  • I can accomplish anything that I set my mind too.
  • I turn opportunities into learning opportunities…
  • I believe that everything works out for the best.

These are only a few that you can use to have a positive life.  There are many more on the internet…GOOGLE: Positive Affirmations.

Here’s a card to send to someone who needs to be lifted up!

Send a Greeting Card to a Special Someone and Coordinating Dies

Simply Said With Karen Posted on February 10, 2020 by Karen GilbertFebruary 10, 2020

When you send a greeting card to a special someone, you will be lifting their spirits. The Special Someone stamp set is so cute with its raccoon, squirrel and rat.  I know I said rat, but this one is a cute rat. I chose to create a “Get Well” card because of the cute sentiment…”This Balloon is Special, it’s Filled with Heal-ium”. Cute, right?

This stamp is a 2-step stamp, which means that you stamp once with one color and then with another color that coordinates.  The Stamparatus makes the type of stamping easy peesy.

At the beginning of February, Stampin’ Up! made available coordinating dies for products in the 2020 Mini Catalogue and 2020 Sale-a-Bration items.  These coordinating products will not be in the 2020/21 Annual Catalogue, so if you have fallen in love with them, you will need to order sooner rather than later.

What is your favorite color combination when you create greeting cards and/or scrapbook pages?  All of us will usually have our favorite go-to colors..  Do you ever break out of your comfort zone and try something different?

Favorite Color Combination

In this post, we look at some color combinations that you might choose for future paper crafting.

Stampin’ Up! offers various color selections for your enjoyment. There are 4 color families plus 2 sets of In Colors.  Every year Stampin’ Up! introduces a new set of In Colors.  With the introduction of a new set of colors, the ones from 2 years ago will be discontinued. The color families include Neutrals, Brights, Regals and Subtles.

How To Decide On Your Combinations

All you have to do is choose which colors to use and start crafting.

There are many ways to choose your colors if you ask yourself these questions.

  • Which are my favorites?
  • What colors are used in the Designer Series Paper that I would like to use?
  • Do I want to mix it up a bit and choose colors that I don’t normally use?

 Designer Series Paper

Stampin’ Up!’s designer series paper is a real inspiration for choosing your colours.  Each paper pack uses a mixture of colors ranging from colors from the different families as well as the In Colors.  So even if you do not decide to use any of the designer papers in your projects, you can make use of the combination of colors suggested.

Here are suggested colors from the Stampin’ Up! Colour Coach:

At the top of the Color Coach, there is 2 arrows that you can click on to go back and forth to the different pages.

Peaceful Poppies For Those Special Moments and Special People

Simply Said With Karen Posted on January 29, 2020 by Karen GilbertJanuary 29, 2020

The Peaceful Poppies suite found in the 2020 Mini Catalogue is wonderful. It’s bright and cheerful and you will be delighted with the cards you can create using this set.

The stamp set and dies used on this card are part of an all encompassing suite.

The one thing I really like about the suites is that everything is coordinated and you don’t have to go looking for embellishments or papers that fit together.  In fact, for this catalogue, Stampin Up added the colors that are complementary to the suite. Yeah, again making it easier.

Thank you to Mary Deatherage for inspiring me with this card.

Painted Poppies

Painted Poppies

Details to build the card:

This card has a lot of layers and could be classified as a card for avid stampers.  If I were to use this card for a class, I would certainly revamp it a bit so it would not be overwhelming for class attendees.

The best way to build this card is to assemble the flowers and the panels before attaching the various elements.

  • Use Poppy Parade ink and stamp the splatter stamp on the Calypso Coral. Die cut with the 2 flower dies.  Now, die cut the cutout dies that match the solid flowers from Poppy Parade and attach to the solid flowers. Die cut the flower centers from Basic Black.
  • From the Perennial Essence Vellum, die cut a variety of Old Olive and So Saffron leaves.  Cut a couple of leaves from Pear Pizzazz cardstock.  You can also layer the vellum and cardstock leaves.
  • With Tuxedo Black ink, stamp a sentiment on the Whisper White Panel and adhere to the Basic Black panel. Attach the Flirty Flamingo cs strip on the Basic Black strip.
  • Adhere the Peaceful Poppies Designer Series Paper panel to the largest Basic Black panel.

Now it’s time to put it all together:

  • Layer the DSP and Basic Black panel on the Poppy Parade card front.
  • On the right hand side, attach the Flirty Flamingo and Basic Black panel on the DSP layer.
  • Adhere the sentiment panel to the left hand side. Adhere the  the smaller flower on the larger flower and attach the flower centers. Arrange and attach the leaves behind the flowers.  Finally, attach the flowers with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  • Tie a  bow with the 5/8″ Polka Dot Tulle Ribbon and attach below the flower with a couple of glue dots.  Place sequins from the Peaceful Poppies Sequins on the sentiment panel.
  • If you would like cut, a panel of 4″ x 5-1/4″ Whisper White, stamp a sentiment and attach to the inside of the card.

Your card is done, so mail it off or hand deliver to a special person.

If you like it all, you can purchase the Peaceful Poppies Suite – dies, stamps, sequins, ribbon and Peaceful Poppies Elements. Click on the link to check it out.

Memorable Birthdays are Not Always About the Cake and Presents

Simply Said With Karen Posted on January 23, 2020 by Karen GilbertJanuary 23, 2020

What do a memorable birthdays mean to you?  For a lot of people, it may mean a celebration with friends and family. Or maybe a trip that you have on your bucket list.  For each person, it will be a different type of celebration.

For me, it was a surprise party.  And, they got me really good.  It  was a Saturday evening, and I was watching TV with the family and all of a sudden people came bursting through the front door, bring food, cake and gifts.  Because it wasn’t a special year, in fact it was a year before a big birthday. They got me good.  No one spilled the beans! Of course, I was in my jeans and t-shirt, not makeup, hair not done.  In other words, a complete surprise.

Here is a card that you can share with someone on their birthday.

Memorable Birthday Card Recipe

Stamp Set:Timeless Tropical.

Ink: Saddle Brown Stazon, Early Espresso.

Paper:Very Vanilla Thick, Terracotta Tile, Whisper White.

Accessories: Die Cutting & Embossing Machine, Layering Circle Dies, In the Tropics Dies, Coastal Weave 3-D Embossing Folder, 5/16″ Braided Burlap Trim, Stampin’ Blends: Calypso Coral Duo, Mango Melody Dual, Old Olive Duo, Daffodil Delight Duo, Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Marker.

Putting the Card Together

Cutting Measurements:

Very Vanilla Thick – 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, score at 4-1/4″ and burnish with Bone Folder.

Terracotta Tile: 5-1/2″ x 4-1/4″.

Whisper White – 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ (large flower), Scraps for small flower and leaves.

5/16″ Braided Burlap Trim- 2 pieces at 4″ each.

  • With the largest circle die from the Layering Circles, cut a circle in the Terracotta Tile cs.  Off center the circle towards the right. Emboss with the Coastal Weave 3-D Embossing Folder.  TIP:  Always do your die cutting before embossing.  If you emboss and then die cut, you run the risk of flattening the embossing pattern.
  • Place the die cut panel over the Very Vanilla cardbase to determine where to stamp the sentiment.  Stamp the sentiment with Early Espresso ink. Attach the panel with adhesive.
  • Stamp the large flower, small flower and leaves with Saddle Brown Stazon ink.  Now, color and shade with the Stampin’ Blends.  On the large flower use Calypso Coral Duo, and the the Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Marker on the flower center.  Color the small flower with Mango Melody Duo and the leaves with Old Olive Duo.
  • Attach one leaf behind the large flower and the other leaf behind the small flower.  Adhere the braid trim to the card front. Fray the ends to give the trim some interest.
  • Arrange the flowers and leaves and attach with dimensionals.

Give your card to someone who is celebrating a memorable birthday.  They will be delighted that you have honored them.

Happy Birthday Wishes – Create a Card for Non-Flowery People

Simply Said With Karen Posted on January 17, 2020 by Karen GilbertJanuary 17, 2020

Create Happy  Birthday wishes for a person who prefers non-flowery cards.  Face it, it’s a fact that not all people like flowery cards.  Sometimes it’s difficult to find a stamp set that does not have flowers.  So what do you do? Find a stamp set that has other types of stamps like, hats, balloons, cake, etc.

But, then you say, those images are so blasé, in other words “boring”.  They don’t have to be. Well, then, you spice it up a bit with other elements.

Double Point Fancy Fold Card Fun Technique with Video

Simply Said With Karen Posted on January 13, 2020 by Karen GilbertJanuary 13, 2020

Create a double point fancy fold card with the Honey Bee stamp set and the Golden Honey Specialty Designer Series Paper.  You will find the Honey Bee stamp set and the Detailed Bee Dies in the new 2020 Occasions Catalogue.  It’s such a versatile set and can be used for sophisticated and elegant cards to whimsical cards.

Double Point Fancy Fold

This stamp set is timely as the bee population is declining because of diseases. Without the bees, we do not eat ,nor do we not smell the flowers. So, they are an integral part of our ecosystem.

I have had several experiences with bees and most of them not good. My most vivid encounter happened when I was very little…wasn’t even in school.  A bee had come in the house and landed on the window in front of me.  Well, I couldn’t resist that fuzzy little thing and thought I would gently pet it.  Much to my dismay, the bee didn’t like my affection, and so I got the first bee sting.  And it really hurt.  Or a least I thought it really hurt.
