Create a Guy Birthday Card – 3 Questions to Ask Yourself

Simply Said With Karen Posted on January 6, 2020 by Karen GilbertJanuary 6, 2020

To create a guy birthday card may be daunting for some crafters.  So what do you do to help yourself. I am going to answer 3 questions that I ask myself when I start.  I hope that these questions will help you as well.

Questions to ask:

  1. What hobbies does this guy like to do…it is woodworking, fishing, car mechanics, etc.  Once you can answer that question, you have solved some of the mystery.
  2. What colours does he like?  Color for guys can be a touchy subject because they like manly colours, however sometimes you can get away with more delicate colours.  I know at one point in time, you would not consider putting pink or baby blue or purple on a guy card because they would think that it is too feminine. But, times are a changin.  So, you need to think about how the colours to choose will be received.
  3. Another question is how do I achieve a creation that will make him happy to receive the card.  Sometimes a guy will dismiss the time you have spent on the design and the creation of his card and sometimes he will appreciate the card.

Armed with the answers to these questions, you can go about creating the card.

I created this card for a guy, so I wanted to it to be something that would interest him.

Questions to ask

Birthday Card Recipe

Stamps Sets: Rooted In Nature, Well Said, Buffalo Plaid Background.

Ink: Early Espresso, Mossy Meadow, Soft Suede.

Paper: Crumb Cake, Very Vanilla, Mossy Meadow, Soft Suede, Wood Textures DSP.

Accessories: Die Cutting & Embossing Machine, Seasonal Layers Dies, Nature’s Roots Die, Nature’s Twine.

Tell The Story

This card was created for someone that likes to make things with wood.  I choose woodsy tones for the colors, the tree from the Rooted in Nature stamp set, the Adirondack  chair and the woodbox, and any matching dies.

Yes, I even created a wood box from the Wood Textures DSP.  The paper is trimmed to resemble logs piled up ready to throw into the fire.

So, going forward when you are create a birthday card for a guy,  ask yourself the questions.  It make life easier.

For supplies to create this birthday card, shop my ONLINE STORE.

PS, the Wood Textures DSP is discontinued.  However, there are a number of papers in the catalogue that do have wood textures.  For example, Pressed Petals Specialty Designer Series Paper

Tea Together Birthday Card Brings Back Memories for Mom

Simply Said With Karen Posted on December 27, 2019 by Karen GilbertDecember 27, 2019

The Tea Together stamp set and matching dies creates a wonderful birthday card for my Mom who turned 95 this month.   Tea cups hold special memories for my Mom.  For their 1st Christmas as husband and wife, my Dad gave her 4 tea cups which she still has in the china cabinet.  When we downsized them, the tea cups were a must to go with them to their new home. I am probably dating myself when I tell you that I went to many teas with my Mom and her friends.  Not only was it the tea but it was also about the fancy sandwiches and pastries.

Wish Upon A Christmas Star You Can Never Have Too Many Stars.

Simply Said With Karen Posted on December 13, 2019 by Karen GilbertDecember 13, 2019

Do you wish upon a Christmas Star?  What does the Christmas Star represent?  Let me give you some information this star. First known as the The Star of Bethlehem and now referred to as the Christmas Star is a major seasonal symbol throughout the world. The star was believed to have guided the 3 Wise Men to the small stable where the Baby Jesus was born, and is a major representation of Christmas.

Wish Upon a Christmas Star

Bright Christmas Star Recipe

Stamp Set: So Many Stars, Itty Bitty Christmas.

Inks: Golden Glitz Metallic, Celestial Copper Metallic, Night of Navy.

Paper: Night of Navy, Very Vanilla, Copper Foil, Brightly Gleaming Specialty Designer Series Paper, Adhesive Sheets.

Accessories: Embossing & Die Cutting Machine, Stitched Stars Dies, Hammered Metal 3D Embossing Folder, Sponge Dauber.

Details

  • Very Vanilla cs 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″ and folded.  Burnish with Bone Folder.
  • Night of Navy cs 5-1/4″ x 4″
  • Very Vanilla Pane – 5-” x 3-3/4″.  Emboss with the Hammered Metal 3D Embossing Folder.  Use a sponge dauber and sponge over the embossed panel with Celestial Copper Metallic  Ink.  Leave some areas un-sponged. Sponge the Golden Glitz Metallic ink along the panel edges.
  • Cut a strip of designer paper – 3-3/4″” x 1-1/2″ and attach with adhesive to the bottom third of the embossed panel.
  • Use Night of Navy cs to cut 2 stitched stars with the Stitched Stars Dies (use 2 different sizes).
  • Lay out your chosen stars and filigree on the Copper Foil.  The size cut will depend upon the number and size of the stars. Attach the same size Adhesive Sheet*** to the Copper Foil.
  • Lay the dies on the Copper Foil and cut with the Embossing & Die Cutting Machine.
  • Attach the copper stars to the Night of Navy stars.
  • Lay out your design on the Very Vanilla panel and start attaching.  I chose the filigree as the first layer, as some of the stars would lay on the filigree.  Randomly place the remaining stars.
  • Stamp a sentiment on Very Vanilla with Night of Navy ink. Sponge with metallic inks around th edges.

Simple Stamping Thank You With Paper Ink and Stamps

Simply Said With Karen Posted on December 4, 2019 by Karen GilbertDecember 4, 2019

Simple Stamping is a year-long challenge hosted by Stampin’ Up!  Each month, Stampin’ Up! issues a challenge to create a theme card using minimal supplies. This month, for example, is to create a Thank You card using stamps, ink and paper.  Pretty easy, wouldn’t you say?

I love to create fun and fancy fold cards, so to come up with the simple card is really a challenge for me.  But, I think I did it with this Thank You card.  You may be in need of a Thank You card or two after you open all your Christmas gifts.

easy simple stamping

Simple Stamping Thank You Card Recipe

Stamp Sets: Beauty & Joy.

Ink: Early Espresso, Crushed Curry, Rich Razzleberry, Mossy Meadow.

Paper: Early Espresso, Whisper White, Mossy Meadow, Magnolia Lane Designer Series Paper (DSP – White leaves on Mossy Meadow).

Accessories: Die Cutting and Embossing Machine, Stitched Rectangle Dies, Stylish Scroll Embossing Folder,  Gold Thread.

A Few How – tos’ – Baby Wipe Technique

  • Use the Baby Wipe technique to create the multi-colored leaves.
  • Fold a Baby Wipe in 4s and lay it on a leak proof surface, like the Stamp Cases. ( These are great for many different uses).
  • Start with the Rich Razzleberry reinker, and squirt ink on the baby wipe in a circle.
  • Next, use the Crushed Curry reinker, and squirt the ink around the Rich Razzleberry.
  • Finally use the Old Olive reinker and fill in the blank spots.  The ink will start to move together.  Try not to go over the same spots or you will wind up with muddy ink.
  • Now, take your stamp and ink it up with the ink on the baby wipe.  Stamp several times.  Stamp the leaves on the card after you stamp the trunk and the pot.

To finish the card:

  • Cut a piece of WHisper White cardstock with the Stitched Rectangle.
  • Emboss a Mossy Meadow panel with the  Stylish Scroll Embossing Folder.
  • Layer the DSP on Early Espresso card base.
  • Layer the stamped panel on the embossed Mossy Meadow and attach the stamped art piece.
  • To finish the card, stamp the sentiment on a strip of Whisper White cardstock. Wrap a piece of Gold Thread behind the flag and attach to the card.

I did add a few more elements to this card, like the Gold Thread, Embossing Folder and Dies.  But, like a said at the beginning, simple stamping is hard for me.

Now it’s your turn to do some Simple Stamping.  If you post your creation, add, #simplestamping to the description and when people type the hashtag into their browsers, then it may come up on their screens.

Magnolias for the Holidays..Pick a Colour and Create Your Own

Simply Said With Karen Posted on November 27, 2019 by Karen GilbertNovember 27, 2019

Think outside the box with a Magnolia for the Holidays card.  Magnolias usually come in variegated pinks and whites, however, we are artists, right?  So, I have  taken artistic license and made these ones red.

Magnolias for the HolidaysMagnolias Card Recipe

Stamp Sets: Good Morning Magnolia, First Frost.

Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black, VersaMark.

Paper: Cherry Cobbler, Whisper White, Gold Foil.

Accessories: Embossing and Die CUtting Machine, Magnolia Memory Dies,Stitched Shapes Dies, Heirloom Frames Dies & 3-D Embossing Folders, Stylish Scroll Embossing Folder, Satin Ribbon, Rhinestone Jewels, Blends: Cherry Cobbler Combo, Mossy Meadow Combo, Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder.

Here’s a Few Tips and Techniques for You

You probably noticed that there isn’t any Cherry Cobbler Ribbon in the catalogues.  So, I used this Technique:

  • Use a neutral colored ribbon , ie something with Whisper White or Very Vanilla.  I had some satin ribbon left from a couple of catalogues ago.  Cut a piece making it as long or short as you need.  Use either the Cherry Cobbler light or dark Stampin’ Blends and color the ribbon.  Voila, you have ribbon that coordinates with your project.
  • My second tip is the make your rhinestones color coordinated with your project. Again use the Stampin’ Blends to color the rhinestones.  Stampin’ Blends are alcohol markers and therefore, the color does not rub off or wipe off.Magnolias In Any Color

The How To’s

Cardstock Measurements:
  • Cherry Cobbler: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ score at 4-1/4″, and 5-1/4″ x 4″.
  • Whisper White:
  • Gold Foil:
Put, It Together
  • Use a Die cutting and embossing machine and the Heirloom Frames Dies to cut  a frame from the Gold Foil.  Emboss the frame with the Heirloom Embossing Folder.  If you are having difficulties using this die and embossing folder, watch the video from this post.
  • Stamp the sentiment from the First Frost set on Whisper White and die cut with the Stitched Shapes Dies,  Emboss the Cherry Cobbler cardstock panel with the Stylish Scroll Embossing Folder.  Attach the panel to the cardbase, adhere the embossed frame to the panel and insert the sentiment inside the frame.
  • Stamp the magnolias with Tuxedo Black on Whisper White.  Colour using the Cherry Cobbler and Mossy Meadow Stampin’ Blends and die cut with the Magnolia Memory Dies.
  • Follow the tip above to colour the ribbon if you don’t have a piece of Cherry Cobbler ribbon. Tie a know and attach to the top of the sentiment oval. Attach a coloured rhinestone jewel to the bottom of the sentiment.
  • Attach the magnolias to the frame with Stampin’ Up! Dimensionals.
  • Cut a piece of Whisper White, stamp a verse or decorate and attach to the inside of the card.

Sit back and enjoy the Magnolia for the Season card.

Spiffy Snowman Dressed in Scarf, Hats and Gloves. Create a Winter Card

Simply Said With Karen Posted on November 18, 2019 by Karen GilbertNovember 18, 2019

Create a spiffy snowman dressed in scarf, hats and gloves for a winter card. Why do I call it a winter card. Well, because we see snowmen in the winter (if you live in the Northern Hemisphere).  Winter occurs in December and can last until March in some areas.  So why now use a stamp set and punch that can help out with many occasions, like a birthday, anniversary.  All you have to do is change the sentiment.

Spiffy Snowman

Snowman Winter Card Recipe

Stamp Set: Snowman Season, A Wish For Everything.

Ink:Tuxedo Black Memento, VersaMark.

Paper: Whisper White, Shaded Spruce, Let It Snow Designer Series Paper (DSP).

Accessories: Snowman Builder Punch, Real Red 1/8″ Curly Ribbon, White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Let It  Snow Embellishment Kit (Coastal Cabana stitched felt scarf, stick arms), Dark Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blend.

I like all the items in this suite and my 2 favorites are the Snowfall Accents uff Paint and the Let it Snow Specialty DSP.

The DSP/scrapbooking paper is fabulous.  Not only is it fabulous, but it is also fun. One side of the paper has basic designs which can be used all year long and the other side may have heavy glitter.  Some of the designs can be punched with the Snowman Builder Punch.

Products in The Suite That I Love

I can say enough about the dsp. You can punch out some of the images, for example the top hat. Some on the images on the paper can be fussy cut. Cut a girl snowman ( one with green twigs in her hair) and the man snowman with the red scarf and the top hat. Use these 2 images to represent a bride and groom and make a wedding card. If you want a family card, add the smaller snowmen (with blue scarf) to the card front.

The Snowman Embellishment Kit is a great item because it has so much to offer.

Spiffy Snowman

  • Stamp a snowman, then dress it up with the accents in the Let It Snow Embellishment Kit. Or use the pieces to make your own snowy creations.

    Kit Includes
    60 stitched felt accents;
     96 enamel shapes;
     36 felt snowballs;
    1/4″ (6.4 mm) Washi Tape, 2 yards (1.8 m);
     Designer box

Product colors: Basic Black, Coastal Cabana, Flirty Flamingo, iridescent, Pumpkin Pie, Real Red, Shaded Spruce, Soft Suede, white

Throughout this post, I have given you a few ideas on how to use this suite.  While I only mentioned a few products, you will get enjoyment from any of the products.  So don’t limit yourself to Christmas cards.  Think outside the box!

Want to create this spiffy snowman winter card and need products?  Shop my ONLINE STORE for the products and have then delivered to your home, of if you live near me, then email me with your order and you can pick it up.

The Magic of Christmas Eve – Up, Up and Away Create Your Own Magic

Simply Said With Karen Posted on November 14, 2019 by Karen GilbertNovember 14, 2019

The importance of the magic of Christmas Eve is so important for many of us. Whether you are young, older or somewhere in between.

Who remembers the excitement that  we experienced as Christmas Eve drew nearer and nearer.  And now are parents, grandparents or great grandparents, we get to watch the little ones.  Remember the lights and how they twinkled on the tree? Or, how about sitting next to the tree and trying to determine which gift was for you.  We spend time with families or friends, perhaps carolling, or eating the turkey or just relaxing.

Did you read “T’was the Night Before CHristmas and All THrough The House, Not a Creature was Stirring, Not Even a Mouse” ?  The excitement was building!  Then it was time for bed. Did you hear a noise on the roof, maybe Santa and his Reindeers have landed.  Time to close the eyes.

The Night Before Christmas Suite is sure to have you reliving that feeling.

  • Emboss the Night of Navy panel using the Hammered Metal 3-d Embossing folder. At this point do not attach to your card base.
  • Layer the designer series paper on the embossed panel.
  • Cut a piece of the classic weave ribbon  – 6-1/2″ and another piece at 4-1/4″.
  • Attach the ends of the longer ribbon piece behind the embossed panel.  Now you can attach this panel to the card base.
  • Use a large star from the Brightly Gleaming Foil Elements to the dsp.  It does not have to be centered.
  • Stamp the Mossy Meadow scrap cs with the leaf from the stamp set and Mossy Meadow Ink. Fussy cut using your Paper Snips.
  • On a scrap piece of Very Vanilla,  stamp the berries with VersaMark ink. Sprinkle with Copper emboss powder and heat set with Heat tool.  Fussy cut.
  • Attach the leaves and berries with Mini Dimensionals.
  • Take the shorter ribbon and tie around the attached ribbon and knot.  You now have a faux bow.
  • On the inside, stamp a verse on a Very Vanilla panel (4″ x 5-1/4″) and attach.  Cut a strip of the same dsp that you used on the card front (5-1/2″ x 3/4″) and attach to the Very Vanilla panel at the bottom. Attach the panel to the inside of the card.
  • The best part is that you don’t need a sentiment because the ribbon says it over and over “Merry Christmas”.
  •  You did it!

Create Occasion Cards With the Good Morning Magnolia Suite. – Versatility is Key

Simply Said With Karen Posted on October 31, 2019 by Karen GilbertOctober 31, 2019

Create occasion cards with the Good Morning Magnolia Suite.  You can use this suite for various occasions such as thank yous, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and the list goes on.

Use the colours that are suggested in the  Designer Series Paper, such as Basic Black, Early Espresso, Mossy Meadow, Petal Pink, So Saffron, Whisper  White.  Or, you can use any of Stampin’ Up’s! colour collections.

There are coordinating dies for the stamps, or you can create your own flowers using the stand alone flower dies.

My friends and I get together throughout the year to celebrate our birthdays.  However due to various things happening in our lives, we had to postpone a birthday celebrations that should have taken place in June.  So instead of creating the traditional birthday card, I did a thank you card.  She is a longtime friend who has been there for me on many occasions and I am truly grateful for her support.

A Good Life When You Can Celebrate 95 Birthdays and 74 Anniversaries

Simply Said With Karen Posted on October 9, 2019 by Karen GilbertOctober 9, 2019

There are many ways to define a good life.  But, when you celebrate 95 years of birthdays and 74 years of anniversaries, I would say it’s a pretty good life.

Yes, I am talking about my parents. They are aging, and are basically shut-ins now, they have had a good run. Last month was their 74th anniversary and we try to celebrate as a family because there is no telling how much longer we will get to celebrate with them. There are 2 children with significant others, 4 grandchildren with significant others and 3 great-grandchildren.  Most of use live in the same town, which in this day, is unusual.  The grandkids and the great grand kids have grown up knowing  their grandparents.  There is a special bond between grandparents and grandchildren that is very hard to break.

Here is the anniversary card that I created for them.  These cards are special as my Mom keeps all the cards that are made for her. I hope my Dad likes butterflies.  He is easy going so a feminine cards won’t easily insult his masculinity.

a good life

Butterflies Anniversary Card Recipe

Stamp sets: Beauty Abounds, Well Said.

Ink: Basic Grey, Petal Pink.

Paper: Basic Grey, Highland Heather, Petal Pink, Whisper White, Soft Seafoam, Vellum.

Accessories: Die Cutting Machine, Butterfly Beauty Dies, Layered Circle Dies, Stampin’ Blends: Highland Heather,  Soft Seafoam, Petal Pink Ribbon, Gingham Gala Adhesive-Backed Sequins.

a good life

How To Details for the Good Life Card

  • On the Whisper White panel, stamp the swirly image using Basic Grey ink.  Stamp in a circle around the panel with the narrow end as the pivot point. It does not matter if you stamp off the cardstock. Because the Basic Grey ink is a water-based ink, let it dry (or use a heat tool) before coloring with the Stampin’ Blends. Colour the flowers with the Soft  Seafoam and Highland Heather blends.
  • Cut a circle from Whisper White cs and the Vellum with Layering CIrcle Dies. Stamp the Whisper White circle with the splotch stamp and Petal Pink ink.
  • Die cut the outer butterfly from Petal Pink cs and the inner butterfly from Highland Heather. While all the butterflies are joined, you can cut them apart and use individually. Layer the Petal Pink butterfly on the Highland Heather butterfly. Place the Whisper White circle at the center.  Die cut the swirly leaf from Soft Seafoam cardstock.
  • Decide where to place the butterflies, now place adhesive on the back of the Vellum circle and attach to Whisper White circle. This extra step will prevent the adhesive from showing.  Attach the circle to the card front.
  • Add the butterflies, seafoam leaf,  ribbon bow and adhesive-backed sequins to the card front. Stamp the sentiment on Whisper  White cs, die cut with Stitched Rectangle Dies and attach with Dimensionals.

a good life

Decorate the Inside of the Card

  • Cut a Whisper White panel. Punch the 4 corners with the Detailed Trio Punch.  Stamp the verse in Basic Grey and a butterfly in Petal Pink.

So, why don’t you try the re-create this “it’s a good life” card. You can use it as a birthday card, thinking of you card or a just because card.  It’s all up to you!

Paper: Crumb Cake, Whisper White, Woven Threads Designer Series Paper.

Accessories: Stamparatus, Classic Punch, 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon, Basic Adhesive Backed Sequins, Rose Gold Thread.

The 2 things I love in this suite, are the Woven Treads DSP and the Heirloom Frames Dies and 3-D Embossing Folders. The DSP speaks vintage and I, and, many others are so happy to see this design style back in the catalogue.

How To Create This Card

Cardstock and Measurements
  • Crumb Cake cs 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″, Score at 4-1/4″ and fold, 5″ x 3-3/4″, 3-1/4″ x 4″
  • Woven Threads DSP 5-1/4″ x 4″
  • Whisper White: 3-1/4″ x 3″, scraps for sentiment
  • Rocoa Rose – scrap

  • Position the twig flowers stamp on the leaves (make sure the stamp is clean).  Once you have it positioned correctly, ink the stamp with Daffodil Delight ink and stamp.
  • Do the same with the flowers…stamp with Rocoa Rose ink.
  • Stamp the “Thank You” on Whisper White cs with Rocoa Rose ink. Punch with Classic Punch, Using the scrap of Rocoa Rose, punch another label with the Classic Label Punch.  Cut in half.
  • Layer the DSP on the Crumb Cake, then the 2nd Crumb Cake pane, the stamped focal image.
  • Layer the 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon at the bottom of the Whisper White panel.
  • Attach the Rocoa Rose cs to each end of the stamped sentiment.  Before attaching to the card, wrap a length of the Rose Gold Tread around the back of the sentiment.
