Thinking of You and PPA 95

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 30, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 30, 2011

Hello Everyone:  Here we are, and nearly the start of June and summer is where?  We can’t seem to get more that 2 days in a row of sunshine and even then it’s not that warm at least compared to what we are used to.
My card today is for the Pals Paper Arts challenge.  The challenge this week is “Elements of Style” with the brad featured.  Brads can be used in so many ways on a card, IE, flower center, attach layers together, hold a bow together.  I am sure that you can think of a few others.
PPA 95
Stamps: Elizabeth (w – 117120 – $11.95 IB&C p 18), En Français (w – 109521 $21.95 IB&C p 142)

Paper:  Naturals White, Very Vanilla, Real Red, Basic Black, Newsprint DSP

Ink: Basic Black Craft ink,

Accessories: Clear Embossing Powder, Antique Brad, Scallop Trim Border Punch, Scallop Circle Punch Versa-mark
The Antique Brad for this card forms the center of the flower.  The flower was cut from Real Red card stock and distressed by scrunching, spraying water on them and finally separating the layers of card stock.

I have wanted to use the Elizabeth stamp since I got it during Sale-a-bration.  I really struggled with this card as I wanted it elegant but simple.  Actually, I cut the image at least 3 times,  each time changing out the ink and the embossing powder. Finally I settled on the Basic Black Craft ink and the Clear Embossing Powder.    Then it was the layout…did I want portrait or landscape, which newspaper print did I want to use….
This card is going out to a friend and I would like to have her know that I am thinking about her at this time. So into the mail tomorrow and then it’s gone and I can’t agonize about it anymore.
Enjoy your evening and until next time….

Rain Rain Go Away!

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 27, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 27, 2011

Hi Everyone:  The rain has been coming down for the past couple of days and it has been chilly.  However, I refuse to turn the furnace back on….I’m just putting on more clothes.  April and May have been the wettest and coldest in this area for 50 years.  What is with all the other weather phenomenon happening all over the world, what will be next?

Our snow pack in this area is about 110% of normal for this time of year and we have 2 rivers that converge in the center of the city, so we may have flooding if it suddenly gets hot.  The best thing right now is that the fire hazard is low and that can change around in a couple of days too.

On to more pleasant things.  My card today is a congratulations card for my hair stylist who opened his own salon last week.  He is so excited and I wish Shawn all the best.

I used the sketch from The Paper Players for my inspiration, and again I used the On the Grow stamp set.  I really am liking water colouring and this stamp set is perfect for that.

PP 48

The “flowers” were made using the Triple Doily Punch, a new style of punch that is available in the Summer Mini.  You can punch 3 different types of designs using this one punch….talk about versatility.

Stamps: On the Grow (c-123077, $14.95, w – 123075 – $19.95 Summer Mini p 14), Perfect Punches (c – 120516 $21.95, w – 117022 $30.95 IB&C p 131)
Paper:  Naturals White, Early Espresso, Marina Mist, Old Olive, Blushing Bride, Regal Rose, Watercolor, Elegant Soiree DSP
Ink: Black Stazon, Soft Suede, Early Espresso
Accessories: Big Shot, Scallop Circle #2, Circles #2, Markers: Marina Mist, Soft Suede, Regal Rose, Blushing Bride, Early Espresso,  Aqua Painter, Modern Label Punch, Doily Triple Layer Punch, 2-step Bird Punch

All the products in this card are available from Stampin’ Up! and you can contact me HERE to place an order or you can shop directly from my Online Store  and have your order delivered directly to your door.  Doesn’t get much easier than that.

Have a great day and until next time….

Time to Stamp

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 22, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 22, 2011

Hi Everyone:  I hope that you have had a great weekend.  I have one more day to go as this is the  Victoria Day weekend and Monday is a day off…yahoo.  I did get my flowers planted and my sundeck cleaned and the patio furniture out of storage and the winter grime cleaned off.  Let summer begin!!  We did have 2 really nice day – temp in the high 70s.  Today started not so sunny but it is shining right now, so hopefully tomorrow will be another nice day.  Not only did I get lots done in the way of chores, I did have time to stamp…bonus!
I used the sketch from Stamping 411 for my inspiration and the color challenge from the Color Lab so I couldn’t go to far wrong.  This card is a birthday card for a BFF.

SSC 204

I had fun with this card and practicing my water colouring.  I try and learn something new from the different blogs I visit and then try them out.  Here, I shaded the glass vase with Bashful Blue watercolor crayons and used the Aqua Brush to pick up the colour and shade the glass vase.  I also picked up another hint…. to shade the entire image with a light grey to bring out the colours.

The Pear Pizzazz DSP was embossed using the Perfect Polka Dotted Embossing Folder to mimic the polka dots on the Concord Grape DSP…the whole layer then is tied together.

I think I am getting better…for one that couldn’t paint or draw when I was growing up, this has come a long ways for me.

Stamps: On the Grow (c-123077, $14.95, w – 123075 – $19.95 Summer Mini p 14), Bring on the Cake
Paper:  Naturals White, Whisper White, Blushing Bride, Perfect Plum, In Color DSP, Watercolor Paper
Ink: Black Stazon, Concord Grape
Accessories: Big Shot, Perfect Polka Dots, Embossing Folder, Markers: Perfect Plum, Pear Pizzazz, Going Grey,  Old Olive, Water Color Crayons: Bashful Blue, Aqua Painter, Blushing Bride ribbon

Well, that’s it for today…enjoy the rest of your weekend and until next time…

Support the Relay for Life

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 18, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 18, 2011

Hi Everyone:  The cards I am sharing today will contribute to a fundraiser event for the BC Cancer Society in June 2011.  The  “Relay for Life” event is an annual event held in June in various cities in BC.  Teams of various people, run and/or walk for most of the day and each team fund raises to contribute to research and care of those afflicted with cancer. The day is filled with activities for the whole family.  There are tributes to the survivors and those that have succumb to the disease with the day capped off with a candlelight ceremony.

We likely all know someone that has been touched by this terrible disease.  While great strides have been made to assist in the cure, there is always more to do.
The Lotto Ripper’s team from the BC Lottery Corporation is in the middle of their fund raising and I have made a set of cards which I will donate these cards so that they can sell to assist in their fund raising efforts.  What better stamp to use than the Hope and Strength stamp set where Stampin’ Up! will contribute $2.00 from each stamp set and MDS digital stamp set sold to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
You will notice that I mention Strength and Hope Designer Series Paper.  Not only did I purchase the physical stamp set, I also purchased the digital stamp set for My Digital Studio.  The digital stamp set includes the stamp brush set as well as various designer series papers and embellishments.
#1 – SSC203

Stamps: Strength and Hope (c-123660, $16.95, w – 118100 – $21.95 Summer Mini p 27)
Paper:  Naturals White, Whisper White, Blushing Bride, So Saffron, Hope and Strength DSP (My Digital Studio)
Ink: Soft Suede, So Saffron
Accessories: Big Shot, Vintage Wallpaper Embossing Folder, Tulip Embossing Folder ,Beautiful Butterflies Die, Scallop Squares Duo Die, Versa Mark, Clear Embossing Powder ,Whisper White Taffeta Ribbon, Pearls, Decorative Label Punch, Oval Punch
This card will also be my entry for the Stamping 411 Saturday sketch.
#2

Stamps: Strength and Hope (c-123660, $16.95, w – 118100 – $21.95 Summer Mini p 27)
Paper:  Naturals White, Whisper White, River Rock, Not Quite Navy, Rose Red, Hope and Strength DSP (My Digital Studio)
Ink: Not Quite Navy
Accessories: Big Shot, Elegant Embossing Folder, ¾” Circle Punch, Scallop Circle Punch, Pearls, Versa Mark, Clear Embossing Powder
The ribbon on this card was made from Regal Rose card stock.  I folded the strip and used glue to hold the folds.  Looks rather scalloped.
#3
Stamps: Strength and Hope (c-123660, $16.95, w – 118100 – $21.95 Summer Mini p 27)
Paper:  Naturals White, Whisper White, Night of Navy, Marina Mist, Hope and Strength DSP (My Digital Studio)
Ink: Night of Navy
Accessories: Versa Mark, Clear Embossing Powder ,Marina Mist Taffeta Ribbon, White Gel Pen, ¾”Circle Punch, Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch, Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack, Big Shot, Circles #2 Die

The Whisper White layer on this card was cased from Split Coast Stampers.  The layer is 3″ x 3″ and the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch is aligned in the center of each side of the square.
#4

Stamps: Strength and Hope (c-123660, $16.95, w – 118100 – $21.95 Summer Mini p 27)
Paper:  Naturals White, Whisper White, Tangerine Tango, Old Oliver, Soft Suede, Paisley Petal DSP
Ink: Tangerine Tango, Soft Suede
Accessories: Versa Mark, Clear Embossing Powder, Big Shot, Tasteful Trim Die, Lattice Embossing Folder, Postage Stamp Punch, Pearls
For this card, I tried to make it a little more masculine and still use the butterfly.  I accomplished this by using  a brown and orange colour palette.  Men also need to be comforted and provided with strength and hope as they support someone with cancer or have it themselves.
So there they are.  I know this is a long post as I wanted to showcase the different cards that I have crafted in support of the Relay for Life.
I hope you enjoyed and until next time…..

Happy Birthday and PP45

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 13, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 13, 2011

Hi Everyone and welcome to Friday.  First off, I would like to thank Tiffany Bauer over at My Crafty World.  Tiffany chose my Mother’s Day card to showcase on her “My Crafty Picks”.  Drop by Tiffany’s site to have a look at all of her crafty picks.

The card today is a birthday card for Lloyd’s son.  Blogger was down yesterday so I missed the Stamping 411 sketch challenge but I have time to enter this card into the Paper Player’s colour challenge.  The challenge was to use Not Quite Navy, Early Espresso and Cherry Cobbler.

I used the Party Hearty stamp for this card and it is also available to purchase for 30% off as part of the promotion for National Scrapbooking Month.  Click here to shop for this stamp.

Stamps: Party Hearty (w – 111532, $32.95, IB&C p. 54)
Paper:  Natural White, Whisper White, Not Quite Navy, Cherry Cobbler, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso, Nautical Expedition DSP
Ink: Early Espresso, Cherry Cobbler
Accessories: Big Shot, Square Lattice Embossing Folder, Circles #2 Die, Scallop Punch, Extra-Large Tag Punch, Baker’s Twine, Scallop Trim Border, Ticket Corner Punch, Dotted Scallop Ribbon Punch, and Button
The Not Quite Navy layer was sponged with Early Espresso after running through the Big Shot and the Square Lattice embossing folder.  It really makes the lattice work pop.
So that is my post for today.  Enjoy and until next time…..

Happy Mother’s Day

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 8, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 8, 2011

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone:  I always consider Mothers to be a caring group and therefore anyone who cares for someone or something should be celebrating today.

Last night my family celebrated Mother’s Day at my daughter’s home.  We had  barbeque salmon along with all the goodies that you have at a BBQ.  My son made the dessert, Dirt (and worms for the kids) which everyone just loves.

This card is also for the TUIC challenge hosted by Kelly.  The challenge is to use flowers and purple.

Stamps: Fabulous Florets (c – 123027, $21.95, w – 123025, $28.95 Occasions Mini p 22), Teeny Tiny Wishes (w – 115370, IB&C p. 157)
Paper:  Natural White, Whisper White, Concord Grape, Pear Pizzazz, In Colours DSP (Hostess Level 1)
Ink: Concord Grape, Crumb Cake, Peach Parfait
Accessories: Dazzling Diamonds, 2-way glue, Blossoms Petal Punch, Doily Triple Layer Punch (NEW – Occasions Mini), Pear Pizzazz ribbon

I added a bit of dazzle with Dazzling Diamonds in the center of each flower.  The flowers were cut out with the great Paper Snips (these are great for getting into tight corners) and then popped up with dimensionals.

I hope the sun is shinning where you are.  It’s trying very hard to shine here today….Believe or not about 30 miles from here they had snow….I guess we have a new season “Sprinter”.

Enjoy your day and until next time…

Mother’s Day and The Paper Players

Simply Said With Karen Posted on May 4, 2011 by Karen GilbertMay 4, 2011
Hi Everyone:  Well, it’s the middle of week but I only have one more day to work as I am taking Friday off…practicing for retirement.  lol
The card today is one that we will be making at my card class on Friday evening.  It’s a Mother’s Day card, however, if the sentiment was changed it really could be used for any occasion.

This card uses the emboss resist technique.  I decided to use vellum card stock and stamped the En Francais image with versa-mark, heat embossed with White Embossing powder and then sponged all with a mixture of Rose Red and Pretty in Pink ink.

The Pink Pirouette card stock was stamped using versa-mark as well.

Stamps: Vintage Vogue (w – 117690, $29.95, c – 118598, $21.95, IB&C p 126, Something to Celebrate Hostess Level 2 – Occasions Mini), En Français (w – 109521, IB&C p. 142)
Paper:  Natural White, Whisper White, Pink Pirouette, Rose Red, Old Olive, Vellum
Ink: Pretty in Pink, Rose Red, Garden Green, Versa-mark
Accessories: Big Shot, 3 ½” Circle Die, 3” Circle Die,  Circle 2 Die, Two-step Bird Punch, White Embossing Powder,  Pearls

This is also my entry to the Paper Players’ challenge this week which is a theme challenge and is so right for Spring.
Stampin’ Up! is also having a Scrap booking promotion for the month of May.  There are stamps available in wood or clear, and for those using MDS (scrapbooking and card software) there are several bundles that can be purchased.

Guess what!  You don’t have to wait for a shipment for the MDS bundles as they can be downloaded right after they are purchased.  Talk about instant gratification.
That’s it for this evening as I am off to post to the challenge.  Until next time….

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 22, 2011 by Karen GilbertApril 22, 2011

Hi Everyone:  It’s Good Friday and the sun is shining, albeit, still a bit chilly but at least there are blue skys out my windows.  Yesterday morning, we had a great deal of snow on the hills, however, it was gone by the afternoon.  Good Friday is a stat holiday in Canada, so there will be many travelers on the road this weekend as this is the first holiday we have had since January 1st.  – a very long haul.  If you are on the road travelling to visit family and friends, please drive carefully.

This card is also for the Tangled Up In Creativity challenge being hosted by Heather at Stamping Mommy.

I am sharing another sneak peek for you today.  The stamp and DSP are from the new Summer Mini Catalogue and these items will be available May 1, 2011.  However, don’t ignore the Occasions Mini as you can still purchase wonderful products from this catalogue until April 30th.  Visit my website HERE or send me an EMAIL

Sneak Peek – The Open Sea

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 18, 2011 by Karen GilbertApril 18, 2011

Hi Everyone:  Yes, we are still having snow, however, that is trivial in light of one of my friends in the Tangled Up in Creativity blogging group whose family suffered through the tornadoes in North Carolina.  She and her family are OK and are in my thoughts.
I am sharing one of the new stamp sets, along with the coordinating DSP that will be available on May 1, 2011.  The stamp set is called the Open Sea and there are so many possibilities with this stamp set and even better, it will help you with those masculine cards that are often hard to come up….Father’s Day, Birthdays, and anything in between.  So in keeping with a birthday and a male, this card is for my son-in-law.

So here is the sneak peek

Inside
Stamps: The Open Sea, Something to Celebrate (Hostess Level 2, Occasions Mini), Bring on The Cake (c – 121958 $33.95, w – 121899 $47.95, Occasions Mini p 20)
Paper:  Natural Ivory, Crumb Cake, Whisper White, Not Quite Navy, Nautical Expedition DSP
Ink: Not Quite Navy, Cherry Cobbler, Chocolate Chip
Accessories: Big Shot, Tasteful Trim Die, Postage Stamp Punch, Early Espresso/White Baker’s Twine, Ticket Corner Punch
Using the passenger list stamp from the Open Sea stamp set and Chocolate Chip ink, I over stamped one of the lighter pieces of DSP.  The layered imaged was wrapped with the Early Espresso/White Baker’s Twine (lots of possibilities with this) and finally, the compass was stamped using Cherry Cobbler ink on Whisper White and then punched with the new Postage Stamp Punch.
Don’t forget the promotion that is currently going on with Stampin Up! – Spring is Blooming Promotion.  You can check out all the details Here.

Enjoy the rest of your evening and stay tuned for  more sneak peeks.
Until next time….

It’s a Yahoo Day

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 5, 2011 by Karen GilbertApril 5, 2011

Hi Everyone:  Well, I did it…put in my retirement date.  It’s to be July 28, 2011.  I know it’s 4 months off, but given how the last 3 months have flown by, I expect the same can be said for the next 4 months.  I got asked what I was going to do in my spare time…well, I have a list starting with stamping, card making and scrapbooking and then there is that other list, clean the basement and get rid of the junk, clean closets.  Of course, it’s my grandchildren that I will have more time for as well.

Now on to the real stuff, my card… It’s a Birthday card for one of my friends and while her birthday is still a couple of weeks off, we are celebrating on Friday.  It’s so hard to get a good night for all of us.

This card is also for the Saturday Sketch Challenge 197 over at Stamping 411.  This was also going to be an entry for Pals Paper Art but missed the deadline…oh well, in 4 months maybe that won’t happen.

So, Happy Birthday Dianne.

Stamps: Baby Blossoms (c-122000 – $24.95, w- 121927 – $33.95, Occasions Mini p 14) French Filigree (w – 113742 – $21.95, IC&B p 135), Create a Cupcake (c – 121982 – $19.95, w – 121915 $27.95, p 22, Occasions Mini)
Paper:  Natural White, Sahara Sand, Whisper White, Perfect Plum, In Colors DSP
Ink: Sarah Sand, Perfect Plum, Rich Razzleberry, Certainly Celery, Pear Pizzazz, Night of Navy, Bashful Blue, Blushing Bride, Pretty in Pink
Accessories: Big Shot, Scallop Ovals Die, Circle 2 Die, Scallop Border Trim, Scallop Oval Punch, Oval Punch, Blushing Bride ribbon

Inside of Card

I even decorated up the inside of the card with a piece of the Blushing Bride DSP and finished it off with the Scallop Trim Border punch and used the birthday sayings from the “Bring on the Cake” stamp set in the Occasions Mini.  I have had lots of use of this stamp and really hope it makes it over to the new cattie.

So that’s it for this evening, enjoy yours and I know that I will enjoy mine.

Until next time….

April with Spring Showers

Simply Said With Karen Posted on April 3, 2011 by Karen GilbertApril 3, 2011

Hi Everyone:  I hope you are having a fantastic Sunday.  I am, even got some things done that I have been putting off.  Yesterday, I had all three of my grandchildren for the afternoon…they had fun and so did I.  There was a high level of energy and of course the usual “he said, she said” thing.  All in all it was a grand day (no pun intended).

If you look on either of the side bars, you will notice that Stampin’ Up! is having 2 promotions.  The first one is the Spring is Blooming promotion and you will be able to purchase the stamp and the designer papers once you have a minimum of $25 (not including tax and shipping).  You could also earn these for “FREE” if you have a $460 workshop.  Click on either of the two pictures (or both…just not at the same time..) to get all the details of the promotions.  The second promotion is a GRAB BAG…loaded with goodies.  The prices for these Grab Bags are $6.00, $12.00, and $18.00.  Get one, or two, or 3 before they are gone, gone gone!

The card today is a spring card and the idea came from Carey Payette on the Stampin Connection website.

Hope you enjoy

Stamps: Just Believe (c – 120453 $31.95, w – 116948 – $41.95 IB&C p 109)
Paper:  Whisper White, Baja Breeze, Old Olive, Paisley Petal DSP (NEW)
Ink: Old Olive, Baja Breeze, Crumb Cake
Accessories: Whisper White Organza Ribbon, Marker (Baja Breeze, Old Olive, Crumb Cake) , Stamp-a-ma-jig

The technique used is called the Drop Shadow.  The image is stamped in 2 different ink colours.  Stamp one image, clean the stamp and load up with the next ink.  Place the stamp just a tad over and down.  Vola!

For the sentiment, the stamp was coloured using markers and stamped.  The saying was stamped using Crumb Cake ink and the Stamp-a-ma-jig.

So until next time….

Tangled Up in Creativity March Challenge

Simply Said With Karen Posted on March 27, 2011 by Karen GilbertMarch 27, 2011

Happy Sunday everyone and I hope you are enjoying it.  I just returned from the ski hill where I watched my grand children’s last skiing day.  The resort is closing down for the winter.  Spring Break is over and soccer starts.

It did snow up there today but there are a few bare spots and now that the weather is turning nice in the valley, one forgets that there is still snow on the mountains.

The card I am sharing today is the monthly Tangled Up in Creativity March challenge.  Dawn over at Sunnyside Up is hosting this month.  The theme is “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” or vice versa depending on what the weather was like March 1st.  We also have to do something with the ribbon.

I picked the Robin who is a good indication that Spring is on its way.  The weather for us at the beginning of March was like the lion and we can only hope that it goes out like a lamb.

Stamps: Nature Walk (c – 121997 $22.95, w – 121925 – $31.95 Occasion Mini p 27, Fabulous Phrases(c – 12051 $32.95, w – 117002 $46.95 p 149 IB&C)
Paper:  Whisper White, Chocolate Chip, Always Artichoke, Early Espresso, Marina Mist
Ink: Chocolate Chip, Early Espresso
Accessories: Big Shot, Elegant Lines Embossing Folder, Crumb Cake Seam Binding Ribbon, Spritzer, Chocolate Chip Marker, Victoria Crochet Trim, Pearls, Versa Mark

It’s difficult to see, but the Early Espresso was stamped with the floral image from Nature Walk using Versa Mark.  This stamp set has really grown on me over the past month and have found myself going to quite frequently.

This stamp set is still available until April 30th so don’t delay.

Hope the sun is shining where you are.  So until next time….
